Deer Run Animal Hospital

308 E. US Hwy 30
Schererville, IN 46375

Dr. Kyle Van Winkle, DVM

I am a recent graduate of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine’s Class of 2012.  My special interests include internal medicine and clinical pathology. My wife Katie and I grew up in northwest Indiana and have lived here essentially our whole lives.  Upon graduating, I moved back to the area and worked at a couple other small animal practices in the region over the past 4 years. Recently I joined the Deer Run team in August 2016 and I couldn’t be more excited about where this opportunity will take me going into the future. I can honestly say it has been a blessing in my life. We currently only have one pet and that is my orange tabby cat named Swisher.  He has played a huge role in my life and stuck by my side  for 4 years while I was in veterinary school. He is definitely not your typical cat as he requires much attention and loves to have “conversations” with Katie and I.  Over the past three years or so, I have discovered a love for weight lifting.  I also have a profound love of music and enjoy singing/karaoke. In my free time I enjoy spending time with Katie, watching movies and going out to dinner.  I’m still just a big kid at heart and enjoy playing video games and participating in sports as well.

 Jennifer J. Barenie, DVM

Dr. Barenie graduated from the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1995.  She has worked in various small animal practices in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.  She joined the Deer Run Team in 2013 and is very excited about providing high quality medicine to her patients.  Special Interests include soft tissue surgery, dermatology and dentistry.

A "region rat" at heart, she and her husband Paul moved back to the area in 1998 to remain close to family.  They have one daughter, Jessica.

Their animal family includes 4 cats--"Abby", "Ringo", "Roxy", and "Miguel", various fish, a guinea pig named "Lolly" and an ancient cockatiel named "Muczka".  Each animal seems to earn his keep in some way;  family cats show up to purr in Dr. B's face in the morning, the male cats provide comic relief, the fish are the cats' "TV", and the guinea pig is cute and cuddly; but all the bird knows is to how to ask for Cheerios by name and sing a jumbled mix of "Andy Griffith" and "Eine Kleine Nacht Music".

In her spare time, Dr. Barenie enjoys camping, cross-stitch, jogging, playing piano, lectoring at church, and visiting family.

Deer Run Animal Hospital is so pleased to have Dr. Barenie join our practice family!  Dr. Barenie will be providing our surgical and dental care as well as seeing patients for medical cases.

Darlene Finley, DVM

Dr. Finley helped Dr. Jokela develop and build Deer Run Animal Hospital from its very beginning in 2001 through 2012.  Her dreams and hard work helped shape the practice into what it is today and she developed many wonderful relationships with our clients and patients.  In 2012 she left the practice to pursue other educational opportunities and to spend more time with her family.

Dr. Finley will continue to  do "Guest Appearances" at Deer Run from time to time to help give the other doctors time away for vacations and continuing education opportunities.  Dr. Finley will always be part of the Deer Run Family due to her contributions over the years.

Fiia A. Jokela, DVM, Dipl. ABVP (Canine/Feline Practice)

Dr. Jokela is a 1990 graduate of Purdue University, School of Veterinary Medicine.  In 1998 she achieved Board Certification in Canine and Feline Practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP).   In 2008 she renewed board certification by passing the ABVP recertification exam.

Why Choose An ABVP Diplomate?    What ABVP Certification Represents.

Dr. Jokela  is one of the original founders of Deer Run Animal Hospital which first opened its doors in 2001.

Dr. Jokela has a special interest in veterinary behavior medicine. This is a field that is sadly not taught to most veterinarians during their education. She currently is working toward a second board certification in Veterinary Behavior Medicine and is currently working on a behavior residency under the mentorship of Veterinary Behavior Specialist, Dr. Sara Bennett, MS, DACVB.

Dr. Jokela currently has a family of 4 pets.

"Tuovi" is a female terrier mix that came to Deer Run as a homeless puppy with severe low blood sugar.  After a few days of intensive care, the bond between dog and DVM was permanent and "Tuovi" joined the family.  "Teppo" is a very debonair kitty with deep green eyes, he was born of a feral mother in Dr. Jokela's neighborhood.  "Bentley" was a sad little homeless puppy turned into Deer Run during the freezing winter of 2013.  He is a mixed breed with a splash of Boxer heritage and he has grown up to be the most handsome boy!

The latest addition is the magnificent "Arandano" a rescued Galgo or Spanish Greyhound who came back from Spain with Dr Jokela when she was on a mission to help this tortured breed of Spain.  To learn more about the mission, view the video documentary: Unbreaking the Galgo.  The Galgos were once the dogs of royalty in Spain but are now cruely treated and discarded like trash. Arandano says he is loving the US and his new family!

Some of Dr. Jokela's most special pets sadly have passed over the rainbow bridge recently and included  "Tikko",her beloved diabetic kitty and "Saima" a Black Lab Mix that was the heart and soul of her animal family. "Raimo" her beloved rescued Whippet who bravely fought bone cancer and loyal "Liisa" a sweet and beautiful rescued black lab.

Although it is difficult for Dr Jokela to find time to get away from the animal hospital, she enjoys visiting the beautiful northwoods of Northern Minnesota where her grandparents settled after immigrating to America from Finland.  She enjoys spending time at her family's rustic cabin on an island near Ely, Minnesota and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
